Difference songs are often heard in scenes of a movie in which are later put together as the “soundtrack” of the movie (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014). Music is used throughout movies in the background and is called “music score.” Classical music is written and uses different instruments to add drama to the characters actions or to put the audience in a mind set of what is going to happen next. The piano music adds romance to this romantic comedy. Also, just as Sam is explaining dating to Jonah and see’s Annie for the first time soft jazzy music starts to play. In Sleepless in Seattle, Ephron, 1993, during the scene when Sam and Jonah (Ross Malinger) are at the airport in the background is a slight hum of the crowd of people in the airport, this adds dimension to the scene. In some cases the sound is placed into the film after the scene is created so it doesn’t interfere with the dialogue. Sound effects can get the audience’s attention such as gun being fired, a dog barking, a window breaking. The sound effect plays a big role in how the audience relates to what is going on in the scene (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014). Sound effects are what one hears in the background. I believe automated dialogue replacement was used in this scene so the vehicle noise didn’t over power their dialogue. In Sleepless in Seattle, Ephron, 1993, when Annie (Meg Ryan) is standing in the road a semi-truck blows the horn at her and a lot of traffic passes by yet when her and Sam (Tom Hanks) say “Hello” to each other all that is heard is their is very clear two word dialogue (Foster, 1993). Voice-over is when an unseen character is narrating or when one of the characters thoughts are voiced out loud (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014). Another form of dialogue used in movies is called voice-over.
If the dialogue is hampered in any way they redo their lines which will be replaced in the scene called automated dialogue replacement.
Actors and actresses often review their scenes to check for dialogue clarity. At times when a movie is filmed automated dialogue replacement is used after the scene has been shot.
